2 day Legal English Masterclass Lost in Translation: 9 & 16 March 2018
As a legal professional in the Netherlands, you are increasingly expected to operate within an international environment. Consequently, you are required to combine excellent English skills with a knowledge of both the Dutch and Anglo-Saxon systems and be comfortable using English legal terminology to explain concepts to your clients and counterparts. This can lead to confusion, loss of clarity or at worst, unidentified misunderstandings resulting in issues further down the line.
The 2 day Masterclass “Lost in Translation” aims to equip you with a better understanding of the pitfalls in using spoken and written legal terminology across Dutch and English environments and provides you with tools and knowledge to recognise and mitigate the impact of these issues. The Masterclass is open to professionals operating in both the commercial and criminal branches of the law and combines both theory and hands-on practical implementation.
Following registration, you will be contacted for a 20-30 minute telephone intake to establish your English level (the minimum requirement for this Masterclass is B2), identify your background and discuss any specific wishes for the Masterclass. To ensure maximum impact, we have limited the number of delegates to 6.
Your trainer, Victoria Laws, is a British native speaker with a diverse and international employment background, including 20 years of language teaching experience. In 2013, Victoria was awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn (one of the four London Inns of Court) and started her law studies at BPP Law School in London, whilst continuing pro bono work researching potential miscarriages of justice. Following the completion of her legal studies in 2018, Victoria plans to undertake a Research Masters & PHD in Forensic Linguistics. Victoria currently specialises in the area of Legal English, supporting a variety of Dutch government institutions and clients with Legal English training and translation work.
The Masterclass “Lost in Translation” costs €999,- ex btw, including a working lunch. The workshop takes place at the Crown Business Centre in Leiden on 9 and 16th March from 09:30-12:30 and 13:30-16:30 and is easily accessible by public transport (Leiden CS) and by car (free parking).
