Herzlich Willkommen bei The Square Mile Online-Deutschstunden. Das Thema dieser Stunde ist: sich vorstellen, einander kennen lernen und Smalltalk. Was kann man sagen, wenn man einen deutschen Geschäftspartner auf dem Flughafen begrüßt, wenn man sich näher kennen lernen möchte oder wenn man einfach nur Smalltalk macht?

Link zu einem Online-Wörterbuch

Wie begrüßt man sich? Schauen Sie sich dieses Video an.

Aufgabe 1

Folgende Situation:
Dienstagmittag, 13:30 Uhr, Flughafen Schiphol.

Welcome to The Square Mile’s online lesson series. Today’s lesson continues with telephone phrases.

Getting through

“…when you smile the whole world smiles with you…”

In English how you say something can be just as important as what you say. A flat intonation implies a lack of intrest, impatience and/or boredom and this is certainly not good for business relations.

Have you ever been frustrated by the number of calls that you receive, when all you want to do is finish your work? How do you react?

Task 1 Watch the video below and think about how you would feel if you were the caller.

Task 2

Sometimes all you need to do is take a deep breath and smile. When you smile it can be heard over the phone and it will make all the difference.

Now match the impolite phrases on the left with the polite expressions on the right.

Task 3

Watch the video from task 1 again and think of ways you could improve the exchange, between the caller and the person answering the phone, using the expressions from the previous task.

Task 4

Listen to the following podcast and make note of the tips mentioned.

We hope you have enjoyed this lesson!

Welcome to The Square Mile’s online lesson series. Today’s lesson is about telephone phrases.

Common telephone expressions

“I hate making and answering phone calls in English I never know what to say.” Is this something you would say? Well, one way to deal with this is to be prepared.

By taking some time before making a call you can prepare by considering the following:

Who are you calling?

Why are you calling?

What do you want to say?

Every phone call will be different but you can begin by building a list of useful vocabulary and standard telephone phrases.

Task 1. Complete the standard telephone phrases by matching the beginning of the phrases on the left with the end of the phrases on the right.

Task 2

Match the idiomatic expressions on the left with their meaning on the right.

Task 3

Complete the telephone dialogue extract using the expressions in task 1 & 2.

Task 4

Now listen to the podcast and take note of any useful tips and language.

Serious Request 2011 vindt plaats in Leiden. Als Leids bedrijf doet The Square Mile graag mee. Wij doneren € 100,- per cursus van 30 uur of langer die tussen 1 december en 24 december wordt goedgekeurd.

Any company that has more debts than money to pay for them is in trouble. But what happens to a company when it’s in that situation? One scenario is to go into receivership.

Task 1: Read the following questions. Watch the short video about receivership and then try to answer the questions.

Task 2: Choose the right word in each sentence.

Do you recognise any of the phrases below? They are all informal ways of saying a company has gone bankrupt:

They’ve gone bust.	They’ve gone belly-up. They’ve gone under. They’ve gone to the wall.
